Psychologists as Expert Witnesses – Guidelines and Procedures for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland

December 14th, 2017

Psychologists as Expert Witnesses

Psychologists with a high level of relevant training and experience can be instructed to give an expert opinion in legal cases. The British Psychological Society report contains guidance and information on the procedure of acting as an expert witness in court, and it is advised that all psychology expert witnesses closely observe the recommendations set out in the document.

The ‘Psychologists as Expert Witnesses: Guidelines and Procedure’ report explains the qualifications necessary for a psychologist to act as an expert witness, how to receive and respond to instructions and how to deal with confidentiality issues and conflicts of interest. It also offers guidance on proper conduct for psychologists appearing as expert witnesses in court, and advice on financial concerns that may arise in the process.
