Katie Reader is a Foresight expert witness account manager, and we spoke to her to find out what she’s been working on over the last couple of weeks…
September has so far proved to be a busy month with, as usual, a broad mix of cases and work for the Foresight office. My workload this month is split approximately 50% criminal solicitor cases, 40% family solicitor cases and 10% other work. This does change month to month though, and we are well equipped to deal with queries from every section of the legal profession.
Cases this month have included several family care proceedings with solicitors requiring expert witness such as paediatricians, psychologists and psychiatrists. We’ve assessed case requirements and made suggestions for the most relevant, experienced and knowledgeable experts and managed the relationship between each appointed expert and solicitor. With our input both parties are aware of their responsibilities and we ensure that court reports and assessments are filed on time.
I’ve also been working on a very interesting firearms case, having been able to identify and propose the most experienced and suitable firearms expert. There’s been a fitness to plead case where I’ve been organising criminal psychiatric assessments. Another case required a mental health expert to assess and report to a mental health tribunal and my assistant, Margaret, helps with all of the cases making sure everyone is aware of their roles throughout the process.
Some of our work now comes from outside of the UK – our reputation is growing! – and I’m managing the report for a medical negligence case for a barrister in Trinidad and Tobago. This case is complex and requires both an endocrinologist and a respiratory expert – both of whom we have in our peer-introduced network of experts.
Cases generally begin with a phone call from a solicitor who has either found us on the internet or, more often, has been referred to us by another legal professional. We take details of the case and then provide relevant expert witness CVs for the solicitor to choose from. Our experience also means that we can identify the best course of action utilising the most appropriate expert for their individual case needs.
